CAN YOU HELP???
From Bob Stover, Executive Director

The Sanctuary is getting close to being done before the June 14th Dedication, but we need you to help finish it.

So much work has been accomplished this spring toward completing the new outdoor chapel, which will be dedicated in memory of Trever Landis and to the glory of God on June 14:

  • Stones Gathered - Molly Beck Dean and youth from SEPA Synod on 3/29; Pocono Mission District Lutheran Men in Mission on 3/29; Werleys, Seth Sharpe, Pam Ulicny on 4/19
  • Stonework Accomplished - John Wehry and Herb Borchert from Hegins area on 4/26; Paul and Angelo on 4/29; Scott Alluord and friend from Valley View on 5/10
  • Trail Blazed and Lined - Jim Atkins and youth from Emmanuel of Bath on 5/10
  • Path Stone Laid - two Girl Scouts and mom from Holy Trinity, Kingston on 5/3; four volunteers from St Mark of Pennsburg on 5/10
  • Benches Constructed - Kevin Kring designed, ordered and painted the column; Bob ordered planks; half mounted by Paul, Angelo, Bob and Girl Scout dad on 5/3; other half mounted by Glenn Simmons, Bert Rex, Bob and John Greenleaf on 5/10
  • Donor Recognition Wall - Anna Crider Sharpe designed it; Jim Rude and others gathered stone; Bob has been working with stone carvers to have it made
  • Landscaping - Sarah Weidner Astheimer and Lori Metz finalized a design; hemlocks donated by Gary Koch on New Ringgold

So much has been accomplished, but yet there is much to do.

Workers are needed anytime, but especially on the scheduled Work Days of:
  • May 31, Saturday, 9am-5pm
  • June 7, Saturday, 9am-5pm

So, call or email Bob at the Bear Creek Camp Office if you are able to help (570-472-3741, exdir@bearcreekcamp.org).  Many people have said they would like to help, and now is the time we need you!  Let's get this project finished in memory of Trever Landis, to the glory of God, and in time for the June 14 Dedication.

Roy Gulliford, Bishop Strobel, members of the Landis family, and many friends of Bear Creek Camp will be at the dedication to make it a day to remember.  A BBQ dinner will be held at 12:30pm followed by the Dedication Ceremony at 2:00pm.  RSVP is only needed for the dinner, with suggested donation of $6.50 adults, and $3.50 children (under age of 12).  I hope to see many of you there.

Executive Director

Below is a listing of some of the major work that still needs to be done.  As you can see, so much has been accomplished, but there is much to do!

So please contact BCC and volunteer today!

31 Benches are mounted; there are only 8 more that need mounted.  We need to order a few more planks, modify some steel columns, and purchase a little more hardware.  We need 2-4 volunteers for about 6 hours.

Stone has been laid done for some of the areas around the back of the stage area.  We still need to dig out dirt, lay gravel, lay sand, and lay down more stone on the entrance path.  I am hoping to accomplish some of this and some tree planting, on Sunday afternoon (5/25) during a work project for those here for Memorial Day Weekend Family Camp.  I am guessing we will still need another 4-6 volunteers after that for about 6 hours.

We also need to set some boulders in at the edge of the hillcrest, as a warning barrier that there is a steep slope just past the edge of the stage area.  With a tractor and bucket, we can bring in boulders from around the site and set them in place.  We need 3-4 volunteers, with equipment, for 6-8 hours.

The cultured stone has been ordered, it has arrived at Wilkes-Barre Clay, and it will be delivered to our site next Friday.  I believe a stone mason from Valley View area will be here on May 31, but we could use another 3-4 volunteers to help do the lick 'em 'n stick 'em of the cultured stone onto the fireplace that day.

Much of the natural stone has been affixed to the concrete block walls that surround the seating area on the sides and in the back.  Enough stone has been gathered to complete this work, and we still have about 50% of that work that needs done.  4 volunteers are needed for 5-7 hours, who are comfortable doing stone and cement work.

We wish to extend this concrete wall with two courses of block all the way to the corner, to create a sitting wall at the side of the stage.   It will then be finished with stone, like the rest of the walls are finished.  For the stone work to be done on June 7, we need the wall to be done at least a few days prior to that. We need 2 people for 4-6 hours to do this work, preferably with a little experience in laying block.

After the sitting wall block work is completed, we need to landscape the swale for the rain water coming off the roof.  Some dirt needs moved against the new wall, and it all needs lined with stone.  Some stone is there already, and the balance needs brought in from various places around the site.  We need 8-12 people to work on this for about 7-8 hours.

We have made a good start on the trail work from the parking area down to the Sanctuary.  There are a lot of rocks that need removed, sides that need defined with logs and rocks, dirt needs filled into holes and low places, and then it all needs covered in wood chips.  10-14 volunteers working for 7-8 hours could finish this off nicely.
